During a DBS procedure, an electrode is inserted very precisely into the brain that is linked to a brain pacemaker implanted in the chest or abdominal wall. When the pacemaker is switched on, a very small electric current passes into the brain, blocking the damaging signals that cause the troublesome symptoms. The ultimate aim is an improvement in neurological symptoms and the patient’s quality of life.

The NHNN Unit of Functional Neurosurgery performs over 100 DBS procedures every year – making it the largest centre in the UK. The unit places great emphasis on patient safety and enjoys an internationally unparalleled track record in terms of the risk/benefit ratio of DBS surgery.

The unit offers neurosurgical solutions for people living with a range of neurological conditions, including:

  • Parkinson's Disease
  • Dystonia
  • Tourette syndrome
  • Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder
  • Headaches
