Journals

The Queen Square Library has extensive collections of journals - some in print format, others as e-journals (online).

Print journals

Check Explore to find out which UCL library site holds the journal you need in print format. Print journals cannot be borrowed, they are for use in the library only and you will need to visit the library in person to consult them. Alternatively, if you only require a single article you can request this via the Scan & Send service. Most, but not all print journals that are held at Neurology (Queen Square Library) are stored in our main library space and can be consulted on demand by any registered library member. However, for some older print journals you will need to request access in advance. Look out for the location Neurology store and please contact the library in advance for those items so that we can get the item(s) ready for you (note: if Explore shows the location as simply Stores, this is kept in remote storage outside London and you will need to request the item via the UCL Stores Service).

E-journals

Your affiliation affects which e-journals are available to you because most require your organisation to pay a subscription for you to have access, though some items are freely available as Open Access content.

E-journal access is purchased separately by UCL (for university staff & students) and by the NHS (for NHS staff) and information about how to log in to each collection can be found at our logging into e-resources page.

  • E-journals for UCL users. Most UCL e-journals can be accessed without a password if you are working within the UCL network, including Explore Access Points (EAPs). However, please note that some e-journals require you to log in with UCL credentials, even when working on-site. When working outside the UCL network, UCL credentials are required to log in and so these e-journals are only available remotely to current UCL staff and students.
  • E-journals for UCLH users. NHS users from UCLH can access ejournals in the following ways:
  • NHS-funded e-journals - this is your primary source of access and it works from anywhere. The A-Z list of NHS ejournals is provided by a service called BrowZine, which can be accessed by clicking 'Browse Journals' in the NHS Knowledge & Library Hub - always remember to log in with your OpenAthens account. The NHS ejournals are provided by Health Education England, through national and regional NHS agreements, plus some extra titles made available by your local home Library. Contact your home library if you have any queries about access or need any assistance.
  • UCL ejournals for NHS users - this is your secondary source of access and is only available to those NHS users currently registered with the library - please join before you visit the library using this online form. After registering as a library member, you can access the university collection by visiting a UCL library in person and using a walk-in computer (called an EAP - view the Terms of Access). Registered library members may also request an occasional electronic copy of any journal article that is available via the EAPs - please visit UCL electronic resource request form.

E-journals are protected by copyright laws similar to those for printed journals. You are also subject to the licensed terms and conditions which vary from publisher to publisher. Activities such as bulk downloading and using content for commercial purposes are almost always prohibited. Terms and conditions for individual journals can usually be found on each e-journal website. Please contact the Library if you need further advice.

What if you cannot access the journal you need?

You can search for journals held by libraries outside UCL / UCLH via library catalogues. A list of other libraries can be found on our other libraries page. You can also obtain a copy of an article from a journal held by another library by placing an Inter Library Loans request (available only to registered library users). Please note that a charge may be payable for this service.

Older print journals with media supplements.

A small number of the older print journals held at Queen Square were supplied with accompanying media. These were tested on receipt but considering the limited lifespan of digital media we cannot guarantee that the media will work and replacements are not available. You may need to source a video player, or a computer with a suitable disc drive to view the content; the library does not have any PCs with suitable drives. The titles with media supplements are:
