How do we know the minds of others? From analogy with our own, has been the philosophical consensus, via an internal "theory of mind" increasingly the target of neuroscientific study. Tracing their historical arc, Professor Hacker reveals these ideas to be riven with incoherences that invalidate many neuroscientific investigations founded on them and inhibit progress in the understanding of neurodevelopmental disorders. He offers an alternative perspective that escapes these criticisms and provides avenues for scientific investigation with better prospects of downstream clinical utility.
