Abstract: I will describe how EEG recordings coupled with direct cortical perturbations can contribute to our understanding of global brain state transitions in physiological (sleep, anesthesia) and pathological (coma, traumatic brain injury, stroke) conditions. To do this, I will take the audience through a journey across scales, from scalp EEG responses to TMS, to intracortical stimulation/recordings in human brains and measurements in cortical slices. These EEG measurements provide an interesting view on the relationships between consciousness and brain complexity and suggest that the electrophysiological consequences of brain injury may be due to the intrusion of sleep-like dynamics in the awake brain.
