The PATTERN campaign addresses a range of factors, referred to as triggers, that may contribute to unacceptable behaviours in academic and similar settings. With a firm commitment to creating environments free from such behaviours, PATTERN identifies these triggers as the underlying sources of unacceptable conduct. In doing so, it lays the foundation for the implementation of targeted, source-specific strategies that can effectively prevent and mitigate unacceptable behaviours, fostering a more positive, respectful, and inclusive academic atmosphere. Our posters, illustrations and promotional material aim to raise awareness about these triggers, empowering individuals to recognise and act against them.
PATTERN focuses on the following triggers of unacceptable behaviours:
- Pressures related to building reputation (through publications, conferences, lectures, etc.)
- Pressures related to securing funding
- Pressures related to securing employment and promotions
- Pressures related to being subjected to critique and peer reviews
- Pressures related to optimising financial resources
- Pressures related to producing innovation
- Workplace mirroring society’s inequalities, norms and dynamics
- Interculturality and differences in perception of what is ‘normal’ and acceptable
Explore our visuals to learn more about these behaviours and their triggers and join us in fostering a respectful and inclusive academic environment, away from the ‘thick skin’ and ‘that is the way we do things around here’ rhetoric and towards a culture of care. Feel free to download the posters and use them as you please – help us spread the word!
