Prof Maria Thom

Maria Thom, Honorary Consultant and Professor of Neuropathology

Maria Thom is an Academic Neuropathologist with a diagnostic and research interest in epilepsy. Recent and ongoing funded research addresses cellular mechanisms in Sudden and Unexpected Death in Epilepsy (SUDEP) and neurodegenerative processes in epilepsy.  We have an established Epilepsy Tissue Bank within the department for surgical and post-mortem samples supported by The Epilepsy Society which also integrates the Corsellis ERUK epilepsy brain collection. Maria Thom is affiliated with the IoN Department of Clinical and Experimental Epilepsy.

The epilepsy brain bank comprises a variety of pathologies, particularly from patients with temporal lobe epilepsy, including cortical dysplasias, hippocampal sclerosis, low-grade tumours, as well as degenerative and rare pathologies. This tissue bank has enabled the study of disease processes operating in human epilepsy, providing tissue for molecular, genetic, cell-electrophysiology as well as histological studies, with an aim to identify causes and potential new treatment targets in epilepsy.
We receive brains and tissue from patients who wish to donate their tissue for epilepsy research. For further information regarding tissue donation or requests, please contact M.Thom@ucl.ac.uk
Prof Thom is a tutor on EURO CNS and International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE) courses and has been a member of the ILAE diagnostic task forces since 2009. She is the audit lead for neuropathology at NHNN, Designated Individual (DI) for the Human Tissue Authority (HTA) licence at the Institute of Neurology, an Executive Editor for Neuropathology and Applied Neurobiology and archivist for the International Society of Neuropathology (ISN).
