Neurophysiology of Human Motor Development

The research group is based within the framework of University College London. The group consists of Simon Farmer, Consultant/Hon Senior Lecturer in Neurology, St Mary’s Hospital, Institute of Neurology and National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, London. John Stephens and Linda Harrison, Professor and Senior Lecturer, Department of Physiology, University College London. Margaret Mayston, Senior Physiotherapist, Director of Bobath Center for Neurorehabilitation, London and Part-time Lecturer in Physiology, University College London. Lucinda Carr, Consultant/Hon Senior Lecturer, Paediatric Neurology, Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children and Institute of Child Health London. Simon Farmer is a member of the Sobell Research Department of Motor Neuroscience and Movement Disorders within the Institute of Neurology.
The group collaborates with basic scientists, neurological clinicians and neurophysiotherapists. We collaborate with Professor Jay Rosenberg, Dr Bernie Conway in Glasgow and Dr David Halliday in York and have worked with Professor John Rothwell and Dr Peter Brown in the Human Movement and Balance Unit, now part of the new Sobell Research Department, in London. The group has extensive experience in the application of advanced neurophysiological recording and analysis techniques in adults and children (coherence and cross-correlation analysis of MEG/EEG and EMG, magnetic brain stimulation, evoked potentials and reflex testing). In collaboration with the Glasgow group we discovered MEG/EEG-EMG ~20 Hz coherence. The group’s mission is to understand the neurophysiological mechanisms underlying normal and abnormal movement in humans, with a particular emphasis on the mechanisms of neural plasticity which bring about functional recovery after nervous system injury. Our present focus is on the role of oscillatory interactions in the physiology and pathophysiology of human motor development.
