New cohort study develops cognitive impairment prediction tool for Parkinson’s disease patients

22 November 2016

A group of researchers, including the Institute of Neurology’s Professor Anette Schrag and Dr Jonathan M Schott, has developed a tool to predict cognitive decline in newly-diagnosed Parkinson’s disease patients.

Parkinson’s disease is associated with an increased rate of cognitive impairment and dementia. Their paper, published on 17th November 2016 in The Lancet Neurology, assessed the use of clinical information and biomarkers as predictive factors for cognitive decline in a group of 390 patients recently diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. The result was a model that can predict, with good accuracy, the occurrence of cognitive impairment in the patient at 2 year follow-up.

Other researchers in the group were Uzma Faisal Siddiqui, Zacharias Anastasiou, and Professor Daniel Weintraub.
