Cryostore and sample quality control

The purpose of this initiative is to improve how IoN manages cryospecimen deposition, storage, quality control testing and redistribution.

Overview

The initiative specifically aims to improve operational efficiency and better meet the needs of staff by providing a standardised approach to cryospecimen receipt, quality control testing, quarantine, storage and distribution.

Solutions provided by this initiative will enable multiple existing cryogenic storage resources to converge into a single centralised cryostore facility.

Goals

  • Ensure that correct governance, regulatory and safety considerations are employed and promoted for all cryostorage requirements in the dual hub.
  • Standardise guidelines and approaches to cryospecimen collection, quarantine and quality control to optimise sample stability and to ensure consistent sample quality.
  • Establish a chain of custody throughout the sample lifecycle, from point of origin to receipt and storage, through to complete utilisation or disposal.
  • Consolidate the necessary infrastructure, processes and expertise to form a single centralised cryostorage facility and associated quarantine and quality control laboratories.
  • Develop a comprehensive and transparent, open-access resource of available sample holdings that enables rapid sample turnaround and distribution.
  • Provide a platform that enables experimental data to be linked back to source material for wider dissemination and to aid collaboration.

Benefits

  • Time and cost savings on administrative duties related to sample receipt, acceptance, tracking and data basing.
  • Time and cost savings on laboratory processes associated with sample labelling, sample storage, retrieval and distribution.
  • Increased visibility and accessibility to sample holdings and their processing histories, encouraging data sharing and collaboration.
  • Improved sample quality by standardising quality management approaches to cell screening and incorporating mandatory quarantine and treatment regimes.
  • Avoidance of duplication of experimental research data by integrating links to sample data.
  • A more efficient solution to index, organise, rationalise and track cryogenically stored samples throughout their lifecycle.
  • Significant cost efficiencies for sample storage, telemetry monitoring, operation and maintenance compared to conventional storage methods.
