A new home for three partners

The new facility at Grays Inn Road will be home to the UCL Queen Square Institute of Neurology, the UK Dementia Research Institute and the UCLH National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery

By strengthening the Queen Square Institute of Neurology's collaborations with its clinical partners across UCL, its partnership with the UK’s leading neurology hospital and the national network of the UK DRI centres, the facility will bring together world-leading expertise and offer unrivalled opportunities for multidisciplinary collaboration.

Our goal is to create the most comprehensive, coordinated neuroscience research hub in the world. By working together, we hope to conquer neurological diseases once and for all.

The UCL Queen Square Institute of Neurology (IoN) has a world class reputation for neuroscience. IoN’s mission is to translate neuroscience discovery research into treatments for patients with neurological diseases.

A number of important research centres are based at the Institute, including the International Centre for Genomic Medicine in Neuromuscular Diseases, the Wellcome Centre for Human Neuroimaging, the Alzheimer’s Research UK UCL Drug Discovery Institute and the Dementia Research Centre.

The facility on Grays Inn Road will house all of IoN’s wet laboratories, while the Institute’s existing space in Queen Square House will be the centre for research activities with a clinical focus. Approximately half of IoN’s research scientists and staff – over 500 – will be housed in the new facility.

About the UK Dementia Research Institute

UKDRI

Dementia Research Institute

The new facility will house the national headquarters of the UK Dementia Research Institute (UK DRI). Launched in 2017, the UK DRI is the single biggest investment the UK has ever made in dementia thanks to £290 million from founding funders the Medical Research Council (MRC), Alzheimer’s Society and Alzheimer’s Research UK.

The UK DRI is leading the UK’s efforts in dementia research and tackling the huge challenge of the condition, which is now the leading cause of death in England and Wales. The institute breaks new ground by drawing world-leaders in dementia research into a single national institute, led by UCL's Professor Bart De Strooper. It operates across seven research centres, working towards a shared vision of finding treatments and cures for dementia as part of the government’s Challenge on Dementia 2020.

The UK DRI’s research centres are based at the University of Cambridge, Cardiff University, the University of Edinburgh, Imperial College London, King's College London and UCL.
