Message from Professor Li Wei, Director and Dean of IOE, UCL's faculty of education and society
Dear students,
I wish you a very happy new year, and hope you had a restful and refreshing festive season despite the problems and hardship caused by the continuing pandemic. During the past two years it has often felt as though the same things have been endlessly repeated – and so it is good to come back to transforming lives and society, our most important endeavour across all our activities at IOE, in which there is always the opportunity find ways forward.
This will be a strong theme for IOE in 2022. I’m delighted to launch IOE’s year of celebrations to mark our 120 year anniversary and our record of excellence, collaboration and social justice.
I recently had the opportunity to show Dr Michael Spence, our President and Provost at UCL, around the Faculty, and to talk to him about the unique nature of our work, our legacy, our plans for the anniversary, and our aspirations for the future. You can listen to our conversation in this video.
Throughout 2022, we’ll be delving into the history of our work in education, culture, psychology and social science, with explorations of how each decade of our history has reflected and contributed to changes in education and society on a global scale. We plan to open up our history and our work through exhibitions, events, videos and podcasts from across our departments.
And we want to celebrate your contribution – as IOE students, you are the future of IOE’s impact on the world. I would like to thank you for all that you have done as a member of this community, and hope you will join me in connecting with our friends and colleagues across the world in the celebrations to come. Over the last two years, as the pandemic has disrupted educations and every aspect of our society, our work has taken on a new urgency and delivered new challenges, which our community has risen to admirably. I look forward to our future as UCL’s Faculty of Education and Society – students, staff, alumni and partners transforming lives and society. This has been and will continue to be our most important endeavour across all our IOE activities.
