Michael completed a PGCE in Primary education.
Why our Primary PGCE?
As soon as I knew I was going to apply for teacher training, the IOE was the first university that I considered; its reputation, even before the recent climb in the rankings, precedes it. In order to be the best teacher you need to receive the best training and that's what you get at the IOE.
What is the best thing about your course?
The huge network of fellow students that I have amassed this year has not only provided me with some great friends and wonderful memories, it also means there are people that can sympathise with my stress levels! More importantly, it means that this year I have a huge support network and will continue to have one through my Newly Qualified Teacher (NQT) year and beyond.
“One day I will be in a position where I feel that I could pass on my knowledge to a new generation of teachers in the way that the lecturers I have had trained under have done."
What is the biggest challenge you faced while studying?
I think the sheer workload you have as a trainee teacher is difficult to handle, especially if you are under the impression that you know the workload teachers are already under. In a year of training and scrutiny you have to be really on top of things. The IOE lecturers have always been willing to help and pass on their advice and have ran some really supportive and helpful workshops throughout the year. Between their efforts and the support of the close knit cohort of students the problems faced on the course are ones that can be overcome.
What are your career goals?
I see myself progressing up through the career ladder within the Primary setting. As much as I enjoy teaching and having my own class, I would really like to have an even greater impact on the progress and achievements of the children in my school and the best way to do this is to become a member of the Senior Leadership Team. Beyond that I may even consider becoming a lecturer as I found the seminars and lectures to be excellent, informative, and both challenging and thought provoking.
Is there anything else you would like to say about your time at IOE?
When you begin the course they tell you it will be the toughest year of your life. They're not lying.
