Q&A with Irina Filip

Irina Filip is studying on the Psychology with Education BSc programme at the UCL Institute of Education (IOE), class of 2020. She moved here from Romania and hopes to become a psychotherapist.

Hi Irina! What brought you to UCL?

I had always planned to go to university and I chose UCL for two main reasons: its ranking and its location in central London, which lets me take advantage of all that the city has to offer. I chose this particular degree because of its reputation, as well as the flexibility that it would offer me, as I am interested in both psychology and education.

What were your first impressions of UCL?

My first contact with UCL was when I came for the offer holder’s day. It made a great impression on me; people were very friendly and encouraging and tried to give us as much information as possible.

What have you found most valuable about your degree programme?

I find the small size of my degree a very big advantage because it provides a close setting for us to get to know each other very well. In addition, the online library resources are extremely helpful for writing essays.

If you're interested in both psychology and education and a close-knit atmosphere suits you, I would definitely recommend this course."

What is it like to live and study in London?

Moving to London from a relatively small city in Romania was a big change. I enjoy living in London as it offers so many opportunities, but I believe it takes a bit of time to find your feet. The transition mentors have been helpful in this regard.

How do you think the system of learning and researching at UCL differs from that in your own country?
UCL emphasises research and academic writing much more than universities in my home country and the learning system here is more interactive and computer-based.

What is the biggest challenge you face while studying?

Juggling between assignments when we have a few on at the same time!

What do you do when you're not studying?

I volunteer with the UCL Student Hospital Fun team, yoga with the Yoga and Meditation society and in my spare time I enjoy going to the opera, reading, and walks in the park.
