Q&A with Ian Rai
Ian Rai is a Media BA student from the UK, class of 2026.
Why did you choose your degree at UCL?
UCL was the only place offering a course like BA Media, allowing me to study film, games and media theory in one degree.
I was also attracted to being able to study in the capital, with its opportunities for student life and relative proximity to my home.
What are your course highlights?
I enjoy the variety that my course provides and that I have the option to study practical film making. There are lessons on the whole process, from cinematography to editing and then working with Unreal Engine for games development and learning the whole 3D development pipeline.
What are your career goals?
My career goal is to work in the 3D medium either in games or animation, working as an artist using knowledge of Unreal Engine and the 3D asset pipeline to work on productions. I plan on doing this in any capacity, whether in a salaried role, as an individual freelancing or through founding an independent company.
What is it like to study in London?
Studying in London has been really fun and exciting. Being in such a global city means there’s always something happening.
Living in central London makes it easier to fully engage with university life and take advantage of opportunities beyond lectures.
While it can be fast-paced and expensive, I’ve found the experience motivating and rewarding overall.
Sum up your UCL experience in three words
Interesting, explorative and diverse.
