Q&A with Tasneem Walji

Tasneem spent a year working full time as Geography teacher before studying the Development Education and Global Learning MA* part-time during 2019-2021.

*From the 2022/2023 academic year onwards, this degree has been renamed as the Global Learning MA.

Hello, Tasneem!

Tell us, what motivated you to pursue a Master's qualification?

I have a BA in Geography (KCL) and completed a Geography PGCE at IOE in 2018, but I always want to learn and know more. Even though I have graduated and am teaching every day, I do not think that I have enough knowledge.

What do you find interesting about your field of study and what inspires you?

The fact that I teach makes me feel that there is always an ongoing debate about education and I find it interesting how I can be shaping a person’s mind. My teachers and my mum inspires me to the best version of myself and to never give up.

This MA was designed to be run fully online. What is it like studying this way?

It offered a very interesting course as a distance learner which really appealed to me as it is so convenient. I have thoroughly enjoyed it as I can find a time that works for me. I have not had to give up any other work or my hobbies. The time I have spent commuting can actually be used as reading and research time.

What is the best thing about your course?

Everything is online and catered for distance learners. The staff are extremely organised and there is a plethora of resources available to use for study.

Has there been an element that has been particularly valuable?

The tutors have always replied back swiftly to concerns and their feedback has always been beneficial during group work and particularly with my writing which has been very valuable.

I have really enjoyed doing group work with people from all over the world. It has been extremely useful to hear about how the course has been attended by people from all over the world which makes the programme extremely diverse. This allows for someone who has always lived and studied in London, to get a better perspective of other people’s views and understand how people are educated.

What are your future plans?

I would like to do a PhD after completing the MA programme.
