Q&A with Tanya Geggie
Tanya studied the Digital Media: Education MA, graduating in 2022, and she shares with us her experience of studying at IOE.
Hello Tanya! Tell us a bit about your educational background...
I studied a Bachelor of Arts at McGill University, majoring in English cultural studies/critical inquiry, concurrent minors in anthropology and gender, sexual diversity, feminist & social justice studies.
What are your motivations for pursuing a graduate-level qualification?
I am motivated by a love of learning and a desire to be surrounded by individuals who provoke thought and intellectual stimulation. I decided to pursue a Masters degree so that I could dive deeper into my academic interests.
Why did you apply to UCL for graduate study?
I applied to UCL because I knew I wanted to study in London, and, as an international student, I was drawn to the institution’s global recognition and prestige.
What is the best thing about your course?
The best quality of my course is certainly the faculty members who lead it. The professors and lecturers of 'Digital Media: Education MA' are incredibly knowledgeable, inspirational, engaging and encouraging; learning from them has been an amazing opportunity.
What do you find interesting about your field of study, and what inspires you?
I am interested in the assumptions about knowledge, subjectivity and personhood that are embedded into how we learn and work and how this leads to approaches that pursue alternate forms of knowledge and subjectivity. I am inspired by the speculative affordances of new or different or creative modes of perception and expression in expanding the meaning of knowledge; disrupting myths of causality, teleology and autonomy to instead embrace mess and divorce knowability from mastery.
Has there been an element of your degree programme that has impressed you or been particularly valuable?
I have particularly valued the support and encouragement from the course leaders and tutors to pursue our specific interests; the course is structured in a way that facilitates creativity.
How do you think the system of learning/researching at UCL differs from that in your home country, Canada?
In my experience, the greatest difference between UCL and the learning system in Canada lies in the assessment structure. Whereas back home, our final assessments are typically due concurrent to the end of a term at UCL, they are not due until the following term.
