Q&A with Cemile Cakir
Cemile reflects on her Education and Technology MA and its application in her field of legal education.
Hi, Cemile!
What was your route to UCL?
LLB Law at the LSE; LPC Law at BPP Law School; admission as a practicing solicitor; tutor training at the former College of Law.
What are your motivations for pursuing a graduate-level qualification?
As a postgraduate programme, [the Education and Technology MA] seemed particularly relevant to the current and future challenges in legal education.
What is the best thing about your course?
Many of the tutors have great expertise. I was particularly fortunate to work with Dr Mina Vasalou on my dissertation. She was able to guide and challenge me in equal measure, making for a rewarding learning experience where I could see my own growth, development and progress.
What do you find interesting about your field of study and what inspires you?
Technology has inspired innovative solutions in legal practice. As such, innovative and progressive teaching practices need to be embraced to ensure students are adequately prepared for the new age of legal practice.
What are your career plans once you’ve completed your MA?
To explore the effective use of education technologies within legal education.
Studying at UCL facilitated a journey of personal growth. Returning to academic study awakened my creative self, reinforcing my self-belief and competence. A worthwhile investment!"
Why did you choose UCL for graduate study?
UCL, together with the Institute of Education (IOE), are highly renowned institutions. It was important to ensure that I received quality education that would be a credible addition to my CV.
Have you undertaken any networking opportunities either as part of your degree or outside of your studies?
I frequently participate in technology and education-related events which present an opportunity to network and keep abreast of technology in legal practice and education.
What is it like studying in London and how do you think it has benefited your studies?
London is always busy. Being in full time employment, there is little time to enjoy all that London has to offer!
Has there been an element of your degree programme that has impressed you or been particularly valuable?
The dedicated time and feedback I received from my dissertation supervisor. The library resources are also invaluable.
What impact has being funded by your employer had on your studies?
Sponsorship from my employer, whilst financially beneficial, did create a sense of additional pressure to achieve good scores.
