Q&A with Tom McKenzie

Tom McKenzie talks about his PhD, which looks at informal and formal education of contemporary music producers.

Hi Tom, or should we say KENZ...

What was your route into a PhD?

Studying a creative audio MA at the University of Westminster.

What motivates you?

My creative practice as a musician.

What is your thesis about?

The implications of evolving music technology on the formal and informal learning practices of contemporary musicians.

What inspires you about your field of study?

As a metacognitive musician the multiple issues highlighted in the thesis tile were made apparent during my MA study at Westminster; this study is the conceptual continuation of the developments in my formal and informal working and creative practice established during my MA, specifically pertaining to music technology and its contemporary application.

What will your next ventures be career-wise?

To lecture in creative music technology and concurrently conduct research in order to improve the state of knowledge in my chosen discipline.
