Chris Lane, Media Relations Manager
In this episode we explore how to use media engagement as a vehicle for making an impact.
Where do the media headlines about research come from? As an early career researcher, how do I write for the media and bring my expertise to life in the minds of the public?
We discuss overcoming fears about your message being misrepresented, and how to engage with journalists openly, professional to professional. Plus, how do universities track media impact and what really counts?
Chris's tip of the day
Trust yourself and trust your expertise. You don't need to be the top expert in the field, you've been researching this for months, you've been researching this for years, you know a thousand times more about this topic than most people outside of your field, so trust that you are an expert and also that journalists are on your side. They're not trying to catch you out, they're just trying to tell a really interesting story and it's a collaborative thing, dealing with the media to get the best story across.
One thing to add if you want to be approached by media journalists, register as an expert at UCL!
