The project ‘Outcomes Together: CAIR x3’ documented the Campus Artist in Residence (CAIR) programme led by IOE Associate Professor Andy Ash and Dr Kanae Minowa (University of Tsukuba). The collaboration aims to widen participating students' exposure to global art education and practice.
Each year, Tsukuba students chose a theme for the residency — 2020: Interaction; 2021: Correlate; 2022: Feel. These themes served as the basis of reflection and inquiry, and each year an IOE Art and Design PGCE student is selected for their responses to the call out. During their residency, these student artists worked closely with curators on various activities, including presentations, video diary production and skill sharing workshops.
The exhibition was open for two weeks in February 2023, forming a teaching resource for students studying Art, Design and Museology subjects at UCL. The gallery space and artwork became the basis of student dialogue and teaching focusing on several themes, which revolved around community practice and collaboration.
The installation was curated around five themes to give justice to the learning, knowledge and work generated by the three-year collaborative effort: reflecting together; changing together; talking together; making together; being together.
Mr Ash said:
“We hope to tell a range of visual stories and experiences that the international artists and curators developed during the residencies. We hope to use these outcomes as a discussion point and as a teaching exhibition and resource for our students.”
