Professor Carey Jewitt has been awarded the inaugural Gunther Kress Scholarly Impact Award
21 February 2023
The IOE academic has been recognised for her work in the field of social semiotics and multimodality, a field she has been at the forefront of since the late 1990s.
Professor Jewitt is a Professor of Learning and Technology and is based at the UCL Knowledge Lab. Her research explores multimodal research theory and methods and how technology shapes human interaction and communication.
The Gunther Kress Scholarly Impact Award is named after the late Professor Gunther Kress, a former IOE academic and a pioneer in the fields of critical linguistics, critical discourse analysis and social semiotics. Professor Jewitt worked with Professor Kress on classroom research projects in UK secondary schools in 1997, investigating the use of multimodality to teach science concepts.
Professor Jewitt will receive the award at the 2023 AERA (American Educational Research Association) Conference in Chicago in April.
