Professor Green is one of seven UCL academics who have received the honour this year. They are among 85 distinguished scholars to be elected to the prestigious fellowship in 2022.

Fifty-two Fellows were elected from UK universities and 29 Corresponding Fellows were elected from overseas. The Academy also announced four new Honorary Fellows.

They join a community of over 1,600 leading minds that make up the British Academy, the UK’s national academy for the humanities and social sciences.

Professor Lucy Green is Emerita Professor of Music Education at IOE. Encouraging participation and inclusion in music has been a consistent theme of her research and academic work, and her research on how popular musicians learn, combined with her work to bring their learning practices into schools, has achieved significant pedagogical impact. Additional research interests include themes concerned with musical meaning, ideology and gender.

Professor Green has been contributing to the life of IOE since 1990 and led IOE's Music Education MA for more than 12 years. Her six books include Music, Gender, Education and How Popular Musicians Learn. She said: “I am delighted, for myself, but more so for the recognition this implicitly gives to my beloved field of music education.”

Professor Li Wei, Dean and Director of IOE, said: "I am absolutely delighted that Professor Lucy Green has been awarded a British Academy Fellowship. Lucy has had a very distinguished career as a music scholar and educator. Her contributions to IOE have been enormous and her work continues to impact the lives of many people and policy and practice. We are very proud of her achievements and grateful for her work.”

Welcoming the Fellows, the new President of the British Academy, Professor Julia Black, said: "I am delighted to welcome these distinguished and pioneering scholars to our Fellowship. I am equally delighted that we have so many new female Fellows. While I hope this means that the tide is finally turning for women in academia, there is still much to do to make the research world diverse and open to all.

"With our new Fellows’ expertise and insights, the Academy is better placed than ever to open new seams of knowledge and understanding and to enhance the wellbeing and prosperity of societies around the world. I congratulate each of our new Fellows on their achievement and look forward to working with them.”
