TIMSS is an international comparison study of mathematics and science performance containing data on the performance and attitudes of 9–10-year-olds (Year 5) and 13–14-year-olds (Year 9) in maths and science.
In collaboration with Pearson, Dr Jennie Golding and Dr Mary Richardson will undertake specialist maths and science advisory work prior to the tests being rolled out in England, followed by data analysis and writing a national report for the Department of Education.
Dr Golding brings global mathematics education expertise and Dr Richardson global assessment expertise to the work.
The appointment follows crucial work that Dr Richardson undertook with Dr Tina Issacs on the TIMSS 2019 report for England which found that pupils were improving in maths but falling behind in science.
For TIMSS 2023, Dr Isaacs (Honorary Associate Professor of Assessment), Dr Iain Barnes (Visiting Associate Professor in the Centre for Learning and Leadership) and David Wilkinson (Social Research Institute) comprise the core research, analysis and authoring team together with expert advisory input from: Dr Wilton Lodge, Dr Esme Glauert, Professor Jeremy Hodgen, Professor John Jerrim and Professor Michael Reiss.
Dr Richardson said: “It is a great privilege to work with our colleagues at Pearson and the Department of Education on the TIMSS studies. We are delighted to continue to build on the research opportunities and learning that has already resulted from our work on the 2019 study. The IOE colleagues make an outstanding team; Jennie and I look forward to working with them all over the next four years”.
Dr Richardson and Dr Isaacs will speak at a conference about the TIMMS 2019 results on 3 February 2021: Behind the numbers: a dive into England’s TIMMS 2019 results.
