Building on the legacies and work of the Centre for Research and Evaluation in Muslim Education (CREME), CEMC aims to be a catalyst for progressive change, contextually relevant research and pedagogical excellence in Muslim educational contexts, in the United Kingdom and beyond.

Under its original mandate, the Centre focused on promoting pedagogically sound teaching of Islam in schools and studying education carried out with ‘Islamic’ ethos. Over time, the Centre has done much of its work in these areas but has also produced, supported and disseminated research on other issues relating to education in Muslim contexts. These areas have included citizenship education, science and religion, education and extremism, history education and teaching philosophy in schools.

This widening scope of work has led to the change of name, in order to better capture the approach, aspirations and activities of the Centre. The new name will allow the Centre to broaden its teaching, research and public engagement and also to capitalise on broader opportunities in education and the humanities.

Dr Farid Panjwani, Director of CEMC, said: “The wider scope and broader aspiration of the Centre will help CEMC to contribute to the strengthening of the humanities and science education in Muslim contexts. This will require engagement with many researchers and teachers at the IOE and beyond. We are looking forward to these partnerships.”
