Professor Beard is one of only half a dozen UK academics who have been elected since the Hall of Fame was established in 1973.
He was nominated for his reputation within the field, as well as his contributions and experience of active involvement in literacy work.

Professor Beard is Emeritus Professor of Primary Education and was formerly Head of the School of Early Childhood and Primary Education at the IOE. Before taking up this post, Professor Beard was a primary school teacher in Berkshire and Oxfordshire, a lecturer at the University of Northampton (then Nene College) and Reader in Literacy Education at the University of Leeds.
He has researched and published extensively on children’s reading and writing. His books include ‘Children’s Writing in the Primary School’, ‘Developing Reading 3-13’, ‘Developing Writing 3-13’ and the highly influential ‘Teaching Literacy: Balancing Perspectives’. Professor Beard was also subsequently lead editor of the ‘Sage Handbook of Writing Development’.
His recent funded projects have included the national evaluation of the Further Literacy Support programme and a follow-up study, an international seminar series on Reconceptualising Writing 5-16: Cross-phase and cross-disciplinary perspectives (funded by the ESRC), a research project on Writing Development at the End of Key Stage 2 (also funded by the ESRC) and a study of Primary Teacher Education in the EU (funded by the European Parliament).
