IOE academic shares insights on the science of singing at Pint of Science Festival
20 May 2019
UCL Institute of Education (IOE) academic Dr Evangelos Himonides is set to present on perceptions of beauty in singing voices and the role of technology in recording them, as part of the three-day Pint of Science Festival.
Dr Evangelos Himonides, a Reader in Technology, Education, and Music at the IOE, will give a talk on the function, properties and unique characteristics of the vocal instrument, and the role of technology in recording, processing, and archiving the singing voice.
The presentation touches upon ‘preferences’ and how these are formed, but also the extent to which perceptions of beauty are context-specific.
The basis of this talk is drawn from the two chapters Dr Himonides contributed to ‘The Oxford Handbook of Singing’ (Oxford University Press, 2019), edited by fellow IOE professor Graham Welch, as well as David Howard and John Nix.
Pint of Science Festival is an annual event that aims to make science accessible and engaging, by inviting scientists to present their research in pubs, cafes and community halls across the world. This year’s event takes place 20-22 May and the theme is ‘What’s next?’
