IOE collaboration launch online course on transforming education for refugee children and youth
17 June 2019
UCL Institute of Education (IOE) academics and the RELIEF centre are launching a new online course to help teachers transform education in conflict-afflicted areas.
‘Transforming Education in Challenging Environments’ is a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) aimed at teachers working in areas affected by mass displacement. It will also be of interest to teachers who are themselves refugees, students studying education and volunteers at humanitarian agencies in education.
Through short videos, discussion forums and online activities, participants will discover practical ways in which teachers can transform the education of children and young people living in conflict-affected contexts.
The aim of the course is to enable teachers to respond to the diverse profiles of children and young people in challenging environments and to contribute to making education a transformative process. The collaborative nature of the online discussions also provides a platform for teachers across the globe to share effective educational practices and experiences with one another.
The MOOC is taught by five IOE academics: Mai Abu Moghli, Tejendra Pherali, Elaine Chase, Diana Laurillard and Eileen Kennedy, as well as Maha Shuayb from the Centre for Lebanese Studies in Beirut. It is part of a series developed between the IOE and the Future Education team at the RELIEF Centre, who co-design education and learning opportunities for communities impacted by mass displacement.
The course begins on 24 June and entails 4 hours’ work per week over 4 weeks. It is available in English on FutureLearn, and in Arabic on Edraak.
