IOE academics awarded funding for international projects

29 August 2019

Three UCL Institute of Education (IOE) academics have been awarded UCL Global Engagement funding to support collaboration with colleagues across the world.

Connections around the world

The three academics are based in the IOE’s Department of Culture, Communication and Media.

Dr Ana Pellicer-Sanchez

Dr Ana Pellicer-Sanchez’s work will be conducted with Dr Raquel Serrano (University of Barcelona). They will analyse results of a study investigating how reading promotes learning English as a second language. They will use eye-tracking to examine how different conditions affect vocabulary learning from reading.

They will also organise a seminar addressed to MA and PhD students at the IOE. The seminar will provide students with an introduction to the use of eye-tracking in English language learning research and will report results of the analysis completed during the research visit.

David Mallows

David Mallows will work on a joint project with the State University of Bahia, Brazil (UNEB). The project will examine the role of the university in developing a community of practice among those working with adult learners.

UNEB runs the only Master’s degree in adult education in Brazil. Mr Mallows will work with colleagues at the IOE and others at UNEB, to interview previous and current Adult Education Master’s students to understand their motivation to undertake the course. They will also look at the impact their participation has had on their professional practice, and analyse the outputs of the students on UNEB Adult Education Masters.

The studies’ results will inform a larger funding bid to map the current state of the art of adult education in Bahia, and to explore mechanisms to support those working in the field.

Dr Andrea Revesz

Dr Andrea Revesz’s research project is entitled: “Using virtual reality in task-based English language teaching to develop communicative and collaborative skills.” This will be a joint project with Italian and US partners to create a virtual reality environment, aligned with task-based language learning methodology, to help English as a foreign language students develop their language skills.
