Edited by Professor Li Wei, Dr Miguel Perez-Milans and Dr Alfonso Del Percio (UCL Centre for Applied Linguistics) among others, the publication will provide an international platform for cutting-edge research that advances thinking and understanding of the intersections of language, culture and society.

The journal will aim to push traditional disciplinary boundaries through theoretical and methodological innovation. In particular, the journal will explore new communicative contexts and practices and publish research that breaks new ground by making connections with other disciplines.

Themes that will be covered include sociolinguistics, discourse studies, pragmatics and semiotics.

The first issue is due out in April and will cover topics including linguistics and discourses surrounding colonial and postcolonial societies, the language of hospitality and the politics of knowledge production and critical language studies.

Dr Miguel Pérez-Milans said: "This is a very exciting project that we have embarked on with the aim of creating a distinctive platform within the language disciplines.

“Though we are aware that there are already a number of well-established journals in this field, we think there is still room for one specifically focused on bringing in critical contributions stemming from the sociolinguistic and anthropological study of language, discourse and communication.

“As such, all our energies are now concentrated on attracting the attention of those whose research may help in challenging our assumptions of how language and culture get entrenched with regimes of power and larger dynamics of inequality, difference and change.”

‘Language, Culture and Society’ is published by Benjamins Publishing Company.
