Dominic Wyse named BERA President for 2019-2021

UCL Institute of Education (IOE) professor Dominic Wyse has been elected 2019-2021 president of the internationally renowned British Education Research Association (BERA).

BERA is an organisation committed to advancing knowledge of education by sustaining a strong and high quality educational research community.

Professor Wyse will take up the role of Vice-President, President Elect 2019-2021 at BERA's AGM in September before taking over as President the following year.

The incoming president's work for BERA has already included developing the BERA-SAGE Handbook of Educational Research and organising the 'Next Generation' conference for early career researchers and students. He has also recently taken up the role of Chair of the BERA Conference and Events Committee.

Professor Wyse said: "During my 29 years as a teacher then lecturer and researcher my excitement for education has not dimmed. I gave my first paper at BERA in 1997, and have seen it grow into the highly professional organisation it is now, with record numbers of members. I'm really excited about the prospect of working with colleagues to help BERA go from strength to strength."

When referring to his priorities, the incoming president listed the following:

"Based on my experience with BERA, I see at least three priority areas:

"Firstly, education already has proven success, for example demonstrated in the Research Excellence Framework. However, enhancing visibility and recognition of educational research, researchers and the best educational ideas in wider society should be an area for increased attention by BERA. The excellence of BERA's internal work should be matched by renewed focus on its 'outward-facing' work.

"Secondly, sustaining each new generation of education researchers is a priority. One part of this is increased engagement with our early career researchers, our doctoral students, and our master's students. Another element is continued support for, and engagement with, those working in teacher education. More targeted planning to support these groups is vital.

"Thirdly, education researchers need even stronger collaborative engagement with practitioners and policy makers. As a result, on behalf of BERA, I have already worked on engagement with the College of Teachers to explore closer partnerships."
