Professor Becky Francis, Director of the IOE, said of the announcement:
"I am delighted that the quality and standing of the UCL Institute of Education's research, teaching and impact on policy and practice has been recognised for the fifth year in a row.
"The IOE is here to improve lives through education. This is something that shapes all of our work, and something that is being felt around the world - through our research and through the work of our students, alumni and partners.
"To be number one again is an outstanding achievement and I would like to thank and congratulate colleagues, students and stakeholders for their part in our collective success."
IOE Pro-Director of Research and Development Professor Alison Fuller shares her thoughts about the Institute being ranked first for Education for the fifth year running in the 2018 QS World University Rankings by Subject.
Twelve subject areas from UCL have been ranked in the top 10 globally, including the IOE's number 1 position for Education.
Professor Michael Arthur, President and Provost of UCL, said: "From its teacher education to its leading-edge research across education and social science, the work of the UCL Institute of Education is internationally renowned. I would like to offer my congratulations to the IOE for this exceptional performance in the QS World University Rankings."
The QS World University Rankings by subject highlight the world's top universities in a range of subject areas. Published annually since 2011, the rankings are based on academic reputation, employer reputation and research citations.
UCL features amongst the world's leading institutions in 39 of the 48 subjects featured in this year's rankings. The QS World University rankings - which rank universities overall, rather than at subject level - will be published later this year. In 2017, these rankings placed UCL at number 7 in the world.
