Dr Daly received the award for her article ‘External mentoring for new teachers: mentor learning for a change agenda’ written with co-author Emmajane Milton (Cardiff University) and published in the International Journal of Mentoring and Coaching in Education.

The paper is based on research carried out as part of a three-year national programme in Wales that provided sustained professional learning for newly-qualified and recently-qualified teachers.

The article finds that external mentors play a crucial role in providing ‘safe’ spaces for new teachers to develop and to find support for trying out alternative teaching approaches. In turn, the mentors need access to a high quality and sustained professional learning programme of their own. The paper proposed eight principles for designing such mentor development programmes.

The Emerald Publishing judging panel noted that the paper was one of the most exceptional pieces seen throughout 2017. They were particularly impressed by its originality and methodological rigour.
