Researchers at the UCL Institute of Education (IOE) will lead the next wave of the European Values Study in Great Britain, which is run jointly with the World Values Survey. Both provide insights into the beliefs, preferences, attitudes and values of people across Europe and around the world.

The Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) has awarded researchers in the IOE's Department of Social Science more than £500,000 to conduct these large-scale, cross-national, repeated cross-sectional survey research programmes.

The European Values Study, which started in 1981, is a unique research project on how Europeans think about life, family, work, religion, politics and society. The World Values Survey is a global network of social scientists studying changing values and their impact on social and political life. The two groups have joined forces to carry out the new survey.

The 18-month project will start in June and will led by Professor David Voas (Principal Investigator) and Professor Alison Park (Co-Investigator).

Speaking of the project, Professor Voas said:

"The central research question could not be more timely: whether values are changing in modern society, to what extent and in what direction. The survey data will be used by thousands of scholars across Europe and around the world for many years to come. We are excited to be part of this great international project."

The IOE's Department of Social Science is already responsible for four of the largest and most important longitudinal studies (following the same group of people over time), including the birth cohort studies for 1958, 1970, 2000. These surveys help to chart social change and reveal its underlying causes. The latest award consolidates the position of the department as the country's leading centre for survey management and research.
