18 January 2016

The Teach First Initial Teacher Education (ITE) programme in London, in which the UCL Institute of Education (IOE) is a key partner, has been rated by Ofsted as 'outstanding' in every category for both primary and secondary education provision.

UCL is one of nine universities who work in partnership with Teach First leading significant areas of training for participants to gain their PGCE. In the academic year 2014/2015 30 Early Years, 161 Primary and 172 Secondary (teaching Business, Computer Science, Geography, History, Mathematics and Modern Foreign Languages) participants were trained at the IOE.

Ofsted stated that everyone involved with the London partnership is highly committed to the vision and mission of Teach First so that participants, schools and programme leaders make a highly positive contribution to educational outcomes, aspirations and life chances of disadvantaged pupils in London and the surrounding area.

According to the report: "Participants' professional attitudes and behaviour are second to none. They quickly immerse themselves into the life of the school, seizing every opportunity to hone their skills and make a real difference to the pupils in their care.  They adopt a teacher persona from day one. They become valued and valuable members of staff. Head teachers are overwhelmingly positive about the calibre of Teach First participants and the difference they make to the school and pupils' achievement."

Carole Scott, Teach First Primary Programme Lead, IOE said:

"The Teach First London Partnership is incredibly important for ensuring that schools in London with the lowest levels of attainment, or where more than 50 per cent of their pupils are from deprived backgrounds, are able to recruit graduates who have received the highest quality of teacher training available.

"I am delighted that our Teach First ITE programme has received an 'outstanding' rating from the latest Ofsted inspection which is a real testament to all those who have worked hard to deliver training at the highest level."

Barry Arnold, Teach First Secondary Programme Lead, IOE said:

"It is very gratifying that the hard work and dedication of our trainee teachers who work in many schools across London has been acknowledged by the Ofsted judgement of outstanding. This affirms the impact these teachers are having, to address social disadvantage and to provide their pupils with the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to succeed. It is a credit to all those who have worked in partnership to support them in their school-based training.

Andrew Brown, Interim Director, IOE said:

"I extend my congratulations to all those who have been involved with the Teach First London Partnership. We look forward to continuing to work in partnership with schools and deliver 'outstanding' results."
