IOE staff nominated for prestigious academic book award

The annual award is presented for academic texts that focus on the teaching of English for teachers, students, consultants or higher education tutors. The nominations are recognised because they make a lasting, significant contribution to the teaching of English.

Dr Potter addresses critical issues for literacy in the digital age in his book. The work aims to extend readers' knowledge and understanding of media literacy and how technology can enhance pedagogy. It contains several case studies designed to inspire digital literacy teaching.

Dr Flewitt's book explores Vivien Paley's storytelling and story acting approach. Within it, the editors use US and UK examples to show the differences in the way Paley's ideas have been construed and adapted. It also explores the tension between current educational policy advocating formal skills and pre-literacy teaching, and the more creative and child-centred 'play' approaches advocated by Paley.

'Storytelling in Early Childhood: Enriching Language, Literacy & Classroom Culture' challenges practitioners to both reflect on their practice and consider the concept of what the narrative is and what might be accepted or expected of stories told by children of pre-school age.

The shortlist was chosen by UKLA Membership and Awards committee, and the final panel will be chaired by Morag Styles, Emeritus Fellow, Homerton College, University of Cambridge.

The winner will be announced at the UKLA International Conference in Cardiff in July.
