Celebrating a decade of community organising with schools and undergraduate students at IOE
Hermit crabs, 39 UCL students, a professor, eight London schools, and a national community organising group – what connects them all? A shared commitment to community action for change.
"As one of the fortunate students on the Educating and Organising for Social Justice module, I had the incredible opportunity to embark on a transformative journey that fundamentally reshaped my understanding of education, social justice, and the power of collective action.”
For the past ten years, the Department of Education, Practice and Society (EPS) has run a placement module in which undergraduate students learn community organising skills and work on community organising campaigns with primary and secondary schools around London.
These campaigns have focused on supporting the rights of refugee, migrant and non-citizen children and families; gaining access to better quality and more secure housing for all; and demanding more living wage jobs, high quality work experience for young people, and more ESOL provision for non-English speakers.
The placement module is run in partnership with Citizens UK, a national community organising network.
EPS invites you to hear from primary and secondary school students and teachers, and UCL undergraduate students, who have been involved with this module. They’ll talk about some of the community organising campaigns they have worked on, and what being able to learn about community organising as a way to make change in local communities has meant to them.
We hope that hearing these voices will provide ideas and inspiration for other staff and students across UCL, and school and community leaders across London, of ways that they too can engage with community organising in university, secondary and primary school level education.
