Impact of arts-based participation in research: Projects on health inequalities in Tower Hamlets
This event will discuss two recent ActEarly studies in Tower Hamlets, which included working with research participants on arts-based generation of data and expression of findings.
Using different media, these two projects included artist-curated exhibitions with targeted stakeholder invitations, open to the public to share findings. In both projects, participants discussed the transformative impact of participation through these arts-based methods. In both cases the exhibition was not part of the original design but an evolution of participatory methods.
This seminar will set the local research context, introduce a framing for arts-based participatory research and discuss the roles of artists, participants, researchers and community researchers in the two projects. It will then turn to the impacts of participation as reported by participants. The speakers will challenge the often inherent assumption of research burden and argue for methodological revision to include positive participant impact alongside ethical processes.
This event will be particularly useful to researchers, policymakers, and teachers.
