Researching gender inequalities in Kenyan education: Promising practices and persistent barriers
Join this event to hear from Dr Ayse Demir, Dr Sarah Fedha, Dr Francis Omondi, and Dr Eliza Ngutuku on their research in Kenya.
This seminar will discuss two research projects that focus on understanding and addressing gender inequalities in the Kenyan education system.
The first research project, funded by the British Council, examines the effectiveness of gender equity initiatives in eleven public universities in Kenya. Drawing on interviews with university senior managers the research highlights practices that are working well but also draws attention to barriers that continue to undermine their effectiveness and considers what the important levers are for change within institutional policy and practice.
The second project, the Accountability for Gender Inequalities in Education (AGEE) project, utilises AI to analyse the representation of gender in curriculum and policy documents in Kenya, Malawi and Indonesia. The seminar will consider the complexities of using AI to research how gender inequalities are reproduced through the curriculum in Kenya. It will discuss how engaging in participatory and consultative processes with key stakeholders on the application of different AI techniques in curriculum research can provide valuable insights into what needs to be done to better address these inequalities.
This event will be particularly useful to researchers, policy makers, academics, and students.
