Reel Queer presents: 1946 (Rocky Roggio, 2023) – film screening and Q&A with the director
A screening and discussion on the documentary "1946: The Mistranslation That Shifted Culture".
Join us to watch and discuss the film "1946: The Mistranslation That Shifted Culture" (2023) with its director Rocky Roggio.
1946 is a feature documentary that follows the story of tireless researchers who trace the origins of the anti-gay movement among Christians and the grave consequences of the erroneous biblical translation of the word “homosexual" in the Bible in 1946. It chronicles the discovery of never-before-seen archives at Yale University which unveil astonishing new revelations, and casts significant doubt on any biblical basis for LGBTQIA+ prejudice. Featuring commentary from prominent scholars as well as opposing pastors, including the personal stories of the film’s creators, 1946 explores the effect of this mistranslation on culture, politics, religion, and the LGBTQIA+ community over the last century.
The screening is a part of the LGBTQ+ film discussion series Reel Queer, lead by Dr Kata Kyrölä and Dr Lucía Vázquez Rodríguez and supported by the IOE LGBTQ+ Advisory Group (ILAG), UCL LGBTQ+ Equality Steering Group (LESG) and Out@UCL. UCL EDI Officer Jo Peres will join us to lead the film discussion.
This event will be particularly useful for researchers, educators, teachers, policy makers and students interested in equality, social justice, history, education and/or religion.
