Introducing the Education for Democracy Index: LLAKES research seminar
Jan Germen Janmaat and Adrian Arellano will explain the development of the Education for Democracy Index which measures how well a country's education policies and practices promote democratic values.

In this LLAKES seminar, Jan Germen Janmaat and Adrian Arellano will be discussing the Education for Democracy Index (EfDI), which measures how well the policies and practices of an education system promote both levels of and equality in democratic competences. It is based on a sweeping review of the literature on the effect of education, broadly conceived, on such competences.
The review allowed the researchers to identify eight educational areas of influence. Some of these areas concern activities that are specifically intended to promote such competences, such as participatory pedagogies, while others represent institutional characteristics that can have unintended side effects on these outcomes, such as the extent of educational tracking.
They will present the effects of these areas on both levels of and equality in democratic competences. They will then show how the results of the review have informed the construction of the EfDI.
