Moral testimony, moral understanding and moral education
Roger Marples relates testimony's problematic status to moral reasons.
After a critical appraisal of epistemic reasons for the alleged asymmetry between moral and non-moral testimony, Roger relates testimony's problematic status to moral reasons including the value of understanding, aretaic considerations relating to character and virtue, together with autonomy and authenticity.
He will discuss how emotions are shown to have a crucial role in moral understanding and moral education, the concern of which should be with moral inquiry as opposed to exhortation. He will conclude with a brief account of emotional education and the role of the arts in this endeavour.
This event will be particularly useful for teachers, researchers and policymakers interested in moral education and the role of emotion in moral understanding.
Please note this is a hybrid event and can be joined either in-person or online. To attend online, please email Yuxin Su: stnvysu@ucl.ac.uk.
