Immersion coaches, conspicuous consumption and early study abroad
Eva Codó will present findings from a research project that explored Spanish families’ intense efforts to capitalise their teenage children through distinction-conferring English skills.

Eva will examine the epistemological choices that shaped the recently completed ENIFALPO research project, and how it has redefined research on families and Family Language Policy (FLP) and challenged the languages, practices, actors, and spaces that fall within its domain.
Grounded on the FLP framework, this research aimed to comprehend the multi-dimensional ways in which English – understood simultaneously as a basic life skill and a marker of class-based taste – was acted upon as a family responsibility.
More specifically, she will analyse the phenomenon of early study abroad through the lens of FLP, considering its implications for broadening the field’s conceptual and methodological scope.
This event will be particularly useful for researchers.
