Assessing interactional competence: Book launch
We interact with different people every day. What makes an interaction interesting, memorable, and effective? Hear David Wei Dai discuss his new book, 'Assessing Interactional Competence'.
David's new book explores the importance of understanding humans’ ability to interact (Interactional Competence) and how this ability can be learnt, taught and assessed. Talia Isaacs and Constant Leung, the respondents, will then situate the assessment of Interactional Competence in broader debates in language assessment and language education.
Are there ways to enhance and evaluate one’s Interactional Competence for more effective social interaction?
Existing practices in language assessment tend to focus more on assessing a speaker’s ability as an individual, but David argues we need to assess speakers’ competence in using such linguistic resources for effective interaction with one another.
This event will be particularly useful for those interested in language assessment, language education, social interaction and language policies.
Please note this is a hybrid event and can be joined either in-person or online. Email Emma Brooks <emma.brooks@ucl.ac.uk> to attend online.
