CLEAPSS Introduction to biology and chemistry
This one-day introductory course for technicians new to the role of supporting biology and/or chemistry practical work.
Course overview
The objective of the course is to enable technicians to gain an understanding of how using CLEAPSS’ resources and adopting good practical techniques can help them support biology and chemistry safely and effectively.
There will be a particular focus on interpreting information on the Hazcards for some common chemicals used in biology and chemistry practical work and using CLEAPSS Recipe Sheets to prepare solutions of these chemicals.
There will also be the opportunity to identify hazards and how to overcome the risks associated with setting up and using apparatus typically used in biology and chemistry.
Course structure
During the day the following will be covered:
- Risk assessment in school science – a quick overview;
- An introduction to interpreting information on CLEAPSS Hazcards and Recipe Sheets;
- Choosing appropriate personal protective equipment;
- Preparing solutions following CLEAPSS Recipe Sheets, including simple adaptations to the recipes;
- Routine laboratory techniques;
- Troubleshooting issues associated with setting up and using apparatus commonly used in biology and chemistry practical work;
- Clearing up after practical activities including cleaning glassware and an introduction to dealing with waste.
Course requirements
In order to get the most from the course it is recommended that participants first complete our free online self-study course, “CLEAPSS Health & Safety for Science Technicians”.
Certificates
You'll get a certificate of attendance on completing the course.

Price per participant is £180 and it includes course materials and packed lunch.
