Research has examined this disparity and found that disadvantaged students are more likely to undermatch, enrolling in lower quality courses than expected, given their achievement, and less likely to overmatch, enrolling in higher quality courses than expected for their achievement level.  

In this seminar, Gill will discuss the role of school type in academic match, comparing mismatch across independent schools, state schools and FE colleges. She reviews the implications on mismatch in higher education for students from both state and private schools.

She'll also look at whether these patterns were impacted by Covid-19 pandemic, asking whether certain school types were better able to capitalise on the replacement of exams with teacher predicted grades in 2020.


This event will be particularly useful for policy makers, teachers and researchers.

Professor Gill Wyness

Professor of Economics, and Deputy Director at the Centre for Education Policy and Equalising Opportunities, UCL IOE

Her main research area is the economics of tertiary education, and she is particularly interested in inequalities in university participation and attainment, and the drivers of it – including higher education finance, information advice and guidance, and school factors.
