IOE Short Courses
The objective of the course is to explore and share ideas for running an efficient and effective science prep room. The main emphasis will be on Health & Safety law, what the law requires of technicians, organising the prep room, supporting practical work and leading a technician team.
The course involves a mixture of presenter input, discussion and tasks. There will be opportunities for participants to share their own good practice, raise their own concerns and identify possible solutions.
Who this course is for
This course is for senior science technicians, and those aspiring to become senior science technicians, in schools and colleges.
Teaching and structure
The day will be a mixture of input from the tutor, discussions, and a variety of activities intended to enhance your understanding of prep room management how it applies in schools. You'll also examine your existing practice in your own school.
Learning outcomes
During the day the following will be covered:
- health & safety law, legal responsibilities of employer & employee, risk assessment,
- prep room layout & equipment, organisation & storage of resources,
- requisitions, overview & booking systems,
- preparing for/clearing up practicals,
- policies & procedures,
- leading a technician team, prioritising tasks.

The Consortium of Local Education Authorities for the Provision of Science Services (CLEAPSS) has a membership of more than 28,000 schools and colleges, mainly in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, where its advice is recognised by HSE, DFE and OFSTED as representing best practice in these areas. As such, it's used by employers as the basis for them to discharge their responsibilities under the H&S at work act, 1999.
