In recent years, immigration has become one of the most actively debated topics in policy circles as well as in academia.
In the UK, the migration issue became particularly important after 2004, when ten new countries joined the European Union (EU). This expansion was the largest in the history of the EU, as it granted freedom of movement to 450 million people across 24 countries. As a result, the UK experienced a dramatic increase in the inflow of migrants, with almost one million people moving to the UK between 2004 and 2014.
Despite this relevance, the effects of international migration on the educational outcomes of natives are not well understood. Providing evidence on these impacts, however, could shed light on mechanisms through which migration affects the well-being of natives.
In this seminar, Elisa Facchetti will explore the consequences of the unprecedented migrant inflows into the UK that followed the 2004 EU enlargement.
First, she will discuss the impact of migrants’ demand for school places on school displacement of native students in England. Secondly, she will characterise the consequences of increased competition for schools and exposure to new peers for natives' educational achievements.
This event will be particularly useful for policy makers, researchers and teachers.
This is a hybrid event and can be joined either in-person or online.
