Why is there a debate about the cognitive advantages of bilingualism?
Join this event to hear Mark Antoniou discuss multilingualism and its effect on cognitive development.
It was once thought that bilingualism may bring about cognitive disadvantages and delay a child’s development. However, research in recent decades has shown that experience with multiple languages confers numerous advantages, though conflicting evidence has emerged which has raised questions concerning the robustness of the “bilingual advantage” for some cognitive abilities (e.g., executive functions) and protection against neuropathology (e.g., dementia incidence).
In this seminar, Mark will critically examine the evidence for and against the bilingual advantage in executive functions, cognitive aging, and brain plasticity, and how future research could move beyond this debate and advance knowledge of how experience with multiple languages shapes cognition and the brain.
This online event will be particularly useful for researchers, policymakers, teachers and parents of bilingual children.
Multilingualism and Diversity: Impact on Education, Health and Society seminar series
This seminar series aims to bridge science with practice in education. Leading experts in linguistics, psychological sciences and neurosciences will engage with education practitioners, parents, students and members of the public who have an interest in multicultural diversity and inclusion.
