Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) for Young People with Special Educational Needs

Overview

This online course was developed in response to the new statutory curriculum for relationship and sex education (RSE).

It will help you understand how the new legislation impacts young people with special educational needs (SEN) and how to create a sustainable action plan for your setting.

It covers:

  • the statutory policy and Ofsted requirements
  • developing school policy in collaboration with key stakeholders
  • planning an RSE curriculum that meets the needs of the students with SEN in your setting.

Who this course is for

The course is aimed at Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) leads, inclusion managers, SENCOs based in SEN and mainstream settings across all four key stages. It also open to anyone with an interest in developing knowledge in this area.

Course content

The course is in four sections:

1. RSE legislation and leading evidence-informed improvement. This will introduce the key themes of the programme, including creating a leadership environment, readiness for change, policy and RSE legislation.

2. Working in partnership and establishing a case for change. This will include a reflection of parents' and young people's voices, overcoming challenges, establishing a vision, gathering and interpreting data and an introduction to implementation planning. 

3. Planning your RSE curriculum. You'll learn about teaching content and resources to support delivery of the RSE curriculum for pupils across all key stages. There'll be a focus on implementation planning, the ‘what’ and ‘how’.

4. Review project: Securing sustainable next steps. This will focus on how to keep RSE on the agenda and planning your next steps. 

Teaching and structure 

This online course consists of four live sessions and a number of activities and pre-recorded sessions which you'll need to complete between sessions.

The live sessions will be held on:

  • Session 1: 28 September, 4:00pm to 6pm  
  • Session 2: 12 October, 4:00pm to 5.30pm 
  • Session 3: 19 October, 4:00pm to 5.30pm 
  • Session 4: 30 November, 4:00pm to 5.30pm.

Certificates

You'll receive a certificate of attendance after you complete the course.

Learning outcomes

This course will help you:

  • understand current legislation and Ofsted requirements around RSE and SEND
  • develop strategies to teach students how to make informed positive decisions about their own relationships, life and safety
  • access a wide range of physical and online resources to support the delivery of the RSE curriculum
  • successfully support parents manage sensitive topics and conversations
  • align the requirements of RSE legislation with other school priorities and demands
  • use a framework for implementation planning to support change in the setting.

About the Speakers

Gill Brackenbury

Gill is Director of the UCL Centre for Inclusive Education. She has over thirty years' teaching experience in schools and higher education; lecturing in special educational needs, language and literacy difficulties.
