Education, Health and Care Plans: from start to finish
A practical course aimed at all SENCOs, class teachers and school leaders to support with the identification and assessment of pupils with SEN and how to apply for, write and maintain a successful Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP).

Please note that this course has been cancelled. The course covers the history and legislation around the EHCPs, writing meaningful objectives and outcomes, annual reviews, effective parent relationships, meaningful contributions from pupils, maintaining a working document and appeals and tribunals. As the number of applications for EHCPs continues to rise, the course will offer practical advice to SENCOs to manage their increasing workload.
Who is this course for?
This course is suitable for SENCOs, class teachers and school leaders.
Course content and dates
This course is delivered over three twilight sessions.
- Session 1 – Thursday, 14 May 2020, 5pm to 7pm
'Getting Started'
This session will include: key SEND legislation, current EHCP research, identification and assessment of SEN at class level, the graduated approach and 'knowing your pupils needs'.

- Session 2 – Thursday, 4 June 2020, 5pm to 7pm
'Effective EHCPs and Where They Can Go Wrong'
This session will include: the application process, understanding and writing SMART targets, key provision and how to avoid appeals and tribunals, the importance of parent partnerships and meaningful pupil contribution.

- Session 3 – Thursday, 25 June 2020, 5pm to 7pm
'The Working EHCP'
This session will focus on monitoring and maintaining a successful, working document.
Venue: UCL Institute of Education.
Learning outcomes
By the end of this course you will:
- understand the purpose and role of the EHCP as a working document
- understand the importance of meaningful parent and pupil contribution
- know how to write a SMART target
- know how to maintain an effective EHCP.
